Trunk Market und Tag in der Innenstadt/Trunk market and day in downtown

TRUNK MARKET

[Natasha told me about the "Trunk Market" a few days ago. She had a small stand there too.
That's why we had to went to downtown on Sunday - we wanted to visit Natasha there.]

[The "Trunk Market" is a free market for selfmade stuff - but a little high class. I was totally hooked about the things there.
I bought two tea bowls for ocha and they weren't sooooo expensive.]

Richtig toll!

[After that we went to Natasha's stand.
Natasha's doing stamps made of stone, all by herself! I told you about the fact, that Japanese people use name stamps instead of their signature before. But this kind of stamps are also used by artists and shops. I like this!]

[A short while ago I ordered a stamp by Natasha and at the Trunk market my stamp was one of the examples.]

[The one on the right site, the small white stone; that's MY stamp.
At the left are the kanji for "Tanuki" (it's a Japanese raccoon), right are a small drawing of a raccoon.
I love this stamp so much!!]

[The design's by Natasha - she's also graphic designer and she's doing urushi!
I'm so impressed and happy about her work and I'll want and will order another stamp - this time for Felix.]

[At this point I really wanna do some promotion for Natasha's work, 'cause it's just amazing!
So here are her websites. Please look at it!

[Okay, in Europe we don't use this kind of stamps, but I think it's a really great gift for an artist or people who already have everything. No one will have the same stamp as you do and it's lovely work.]

[We also used the day for a visit of downtown. We ate together, were at the game station, did a little shopping and were again at the cha-no-wa, the matcha café. This time you can see the lovely and delicious creations of this café.

Miyajima

MIYAJIMA

[Now I got some time to write a new post. The last days were very exciting and this week will be even more exciting for me, 'cause from Wednesday morning to Saturday evening I'll be in Osaka and Kyoto.]

[On Saturday the university organised a trip to Miyajima for us foreign students. But there were also some Japanese students and professors.
First we had to go to Yokogawa station by bus. Then take a tram and last took a ferry.]

[There are a lot of deer. They are tame, but very sassy... They race round and steal your food. But we really had to fondle them. They were totally cute at all.
There are monkeys too at Miyajima, but just at the top of the mountains. We weren't there. But next time I really have to climb the top.]

Miyajima bedeutet Schrein-Insel.

[Miyajima means "shrine island". And it's so beautiful there.
Miyajima, Amanohashidate and Matsushima are the three most beautiful landscapes in Japan.]

[There are a lot of shrines and temple.
The most famous one is the Itsukushima-Shrine with the big red Torii in the water. The Torii is the most popular motive of Miyajima.
Supposedly you'll get a lot of luck if you touch the Torii. Next time I'll touch it - a little luck isn't bad, right? ]

[Miyajima is famous for it's grilled oyster and Momiji manju.
I ate both of it and both was very delicious. This time the manju was fried. It was very fatty, but delicious.]

[Really lovely: There are a lot of very old houses at the island!!
The nature is so amazing. There are maple trees everywhere, everywhere the leaves are red. The maidenhair tree is so yellow and I really love the Autumn in Japan so much.]

[Last but not least - some pictures of myself with friends.]

Wagashi III

WAGASHI III

Heute erstmal ein Herbst-Wagashi; "Kuri Yokan".
Yokan hatte ich euch neulich bereits vorgestellt (siehe hier).

[Autumn wagashi called "kuri yokan".
A little time ago I told you about yokan (click here).]

[This time I bought a yokan with sweet chestnut ("kuri"). I love sweet chestnut; every christmas market in Germany I have to buy some hot chestnut.

[This kind of yokan is definetely the best one (in my mind). I think the combination of sweet azuki beans and nutty chestnut is unbeatable in taste.]

[This is another momiji manju - I still love them.
But this one is with matcha (in the dough) and azuki bean filling. This combination is also very nice, because of the matcha the dough is a little bitter. So this cake isn't as sweet as usual.]

Über Tee/About tea

TEE/TEA

[I was asked by a few people about "Japanese tea". That's why I thought I should write a whole entry just about this maintheme.
I just hope I won't write something stupid or wrong now...]

[Everyone who knows me a little bit, knows that I love tea! I can't resist to buy tea if I see a tea shop.]

[Because I'm in love with Japanese teas, I'll send tea as christmas presents to the most of my dearest. I hope they will like it as much as I do too.]

[I know 8 different types of tea here in Japan:
gyokuro, kabusecha, sencha, fukamushicha, kariganecha, houjicha, genmaicha & of course matcha.]

[All green teas are made of the same tea plant!
The preparation of green tea is an own art here in Japan. There are a lot of different tea ceremonies (but I'll write more about it at a different time).]

Tee und Zubehör - nur für mich
Tea and gadgets - just for myself

Gyokuro

[...is regarded as one of the highest grade Japanese green teas ever. I was told that you serve gyokuro to your guest to show them how important they are.
Of course this kind of tea isn't very cheap.]

[Reasons:
Gyokuro is less bitter than the most green teas - in my mind the taste is also a little bit sweet. The bushes are shaded for a few weeks. In sun tea leaves became more bitter.]

[The preparation is also a little bit different. The water should be just roundabout 50 - 60°C. If it's hoter you'll destroy the taste.]

Kabusecha

[...is also shaded from direct sunlight for one week. That should make this tea more tasty. Kabusecha is rich as gyokuro and refreshing as sencha.
The water should be about 70°C for this tea.]

Sencha

[...is (with the exception of matcha) my favorite Japanese tea. Sencha is the most famous green tea in the world.]

[Sencha can be classified into many grades of quality. You can buy regular qualities in the supermarket and you'll get free sencha in restaurants here in Japan. High grade sencha is often served on special occasions.]

[The taste is fresh. After drying the leaves will be steamed.]

[Sencha could be (depends on the harvest) mild to strong, sweet to bitter. It's possible to write a whole entry just about sencha, but I thought it would be too much.]

[For a delicious sencha the water should be around 70°C. Steep the leaves for 2 minutes and you'll get one of my favorite teas.]

Fukamushicha

[...is also called "deep steamed sencha".
The steaming time is more than twice longer than for regular sencha. The liquid made of this leaves is deep grean and rich in taste. Steeping time is shorter than for sencha.]

Kariganecha

[...is also called "kukicha". This tea is made of stems. It has less caffeine as the most green teas. If you want to drink delicious kukicha the watertemperature should be between 80 and 9°C.]

Houjicha

[...is roasted green tea.
It's color is golden brown and tasted just roasted.]

Genmaicha

[...is a mix of green tea leaves and roasted rice.
It's taste is grassy and nutty. Japanese people like to drink cold genmaicha during the summer.]

Matcha

[...is my absolutely favorite of Japanese teas.
Matcha is always made of high quality sencha. The leaves were grind to a very fine and smooth powder.]

[Matcha is mainly used for tea ceremonies. But there are also a lot of sweets made with matcha like cakes, jellies and ice cream, but drinks too.]

[You drink the whole tea leave - that's why matcha is the most healthy green tea in the world.]

Herbst/Autumn

HERBST/AUTUMN

[It's a while since I was at downtown, but today I got some time to go there again. First I made some different plans for today, but typical for life...sometimes you need a plan B. But I had a lot of fun, 'cause I could take some pictures of the first autumn leaves.]

[The leaves just started to change their colors - at last it will be autumn. I love autumn the most!! It's the most beautiful time in year for me. And this autumn will become one of the best ones in my life!!]

[The colors of the leaves are much more intensive and bright than in Germany. It's amazing. I'm really looking forward to the visit of Miyajima next weekend. There are a lot of maple leaves - so every tree will shine in red.]

[In two weeks Agota and I will do "momiji hunting" with our cameras. We try to take photos of the maple leaves at a lot of different places in and around Hiroshima.]

HIF Halloween Party & Art Party

HIF HALLOWEEN PARTY & ART PARTY

[Yesterday evening there were two parties I had to join. The halloween party of HIF students and a party of the sculpture students.]

[Nathalie and I worn the same costume: Stitch. Nathalie said we are "mommy Stitch" and "baby Stitch"...
Unfortunately we just could stay roundabout an hour at this party, 'cause we really had to join the other party too. Charlie (he's the head of our department) invited us.]

[Of course I was happy to see Yuri, Narumi, Kou, Kai, Yuka and the rest anyway. Yuri took a photo of us...Nathalie took one too, when we used the lift. I really have to ask her if I could get it. We are really looking like "bad ass stichtes" at the photo.]

[The second party was at the stone studio of sculpture students. But everyone of the art faculty joined the party.]

[There were a lot of food and also sake for free - everything was delicious. The mood was fantastic and there were some small shows by students. Very funny!]

[I also met a lot of new people - and everyone was open-minded, funny and extremely kind! I just can say that I really like the people of art department.]

Töpfer-Kurs/Pottery Course

TÖPFER-KURS/POTTERY COURSE

[Beginning of the week Sebastian told me about a pottery course here at the university. Because I couldn't find and buy my super special teacup à la Ueda Sôko, Mr. Nakamura told me about doing a matcha bowl by myself...]

Also gesagt - getan!

[So I did! Today I did two bowls for matcha tea by myself. And to be honest - they aren't ugly. I'm a little bit proud.]

[Now I have to find out when they'll be burned and where and how to glaze...]

[I had a short visit of Azusa a few minutes ago. She was in Tokyo with her class for a few days and she gave me a little present she bought at her trip.
A small box with some candies (with animal print).
The box was wrapped in furoshiki. It's a fabric which laced up in beautiful shapes.
Azusa, you are the best!!]
